Making rural broadband a reality
In late 2018, Central Alabama Electric Cooperative’s (CAEC) Board of Trustees approved a plan to construct a fiber network for broadband to CAEC members who desperately need this service. This process involved creating a subsidiary (Central Access), wholly owned by CAEC. Our fiber construction began on Aug. 5, 2019, with a 400-mile fiber core to serve CAEC’s 24 substations and six offices.

In this pioneering, cooperative spirit, we are currently building out to those members in the initial core construction area. In addition to the core ring, grants have been awarded for several of our communities and those areas have been incorporated into our construction plans.

Outside of these grant areas, deciding where to construct next will be determined by you. You can visit www.centralaccess.com to view a map of our service area containing zones, grant areas and the initial construction core. If you fall into a future activation zone, you will be able to see which one your address falls into and the interest level for our service within that zone. This is key since moving forward, customer demand will assist in determining our construction route and zone activation, so the more people signed-up in an area, the greater chance that you will be added to the construction plans. Encourage your friends and neighbors to indicate their desire for service by committing at www.centralaccess.com.

This will be a multi-year project, but taking this first step now gets us closer to providing broadband to those who no one else has been willing to serve.
